One day in the late 1980’s, Bob McCormick woke up in Fargo, North Dakota and decided it was time for a life change. The 1975 graduate of North Dakota State University was vice president of Northern Improvement Construction, a highway heavy road construction company, having worked his way up from laborer through heavy equipment operator, foreman, superintendent and then to the executive level.
“But it looked like I was going to be living in Fargo the rest of my life doing exactly what I was doing, and that’s not what I wanted,” he explains. “I wanted a place where I could meet and get to know people from around the world with a variety of different interests and backgrounds." Having a skiing background, he decided to head for Vail, which he first visited in 1970, and become a ski instructor.
In 1991, he met his future wife, Julie, while she was on a weekend ski trip in Vail. They married soon after and began planning a family. That prompted yet another lifestyle change. “I knew I had to get a job which would support a family," says Bob.
With his expertise in reading numbers and plans from his construction background and his people skills from teaching skiing, he concluded that real estate would be a “good fit.” In 1994, Bob joined the Beaver Creek sales team of Vail Associates Real Estate (now SSF), and in 1999 moved to the company’s Bachelor Gulch Sales Cabin, where he remains today. Bob’s hunch that real estate would be a “good fit” proved prophetic.
“This is the best job in the world, probably more than anything I could have ever expected,” he says. “And it’s an honor to work with my Bachelor Gulch colleagues,” whom he describes as “the best in the industry.”
Bob also enjoys the fact that so many of his clients have become his friends. Throughout the winter, he often can be found skiing with them. When not at the office or skiing with friends and clients, Bob enjoys skiing with his family. He also is an avid golfer and mountain biker. The McCormicks live in Red Sky Ranch with their daughters, Alexandra and Isabella. The family is active in the St. Clare of Assisi School, which both children attend.
